Meet Your Instructor:
Hi there! My name is Emily Mills, and I'm an illustrator, author, and your teacher for this course! I first discovered sketchnoting in 2015 and quickly became a professional, drawing at live events for companies like Delta Airlines, Chick-Fil-A, Figma, and S&P. I started teaching in-person classes 2017, and what began as a 3-hour in-person workshop in Tennessee soon turned into an online learning platform with thousands of students worldwide! Sketch Academy is a place for you to lean into your creativity and develop new skills as you grow in your creative practice.
How this course works:
There are no prerequisites for this course. It is beginner-friendly, but beginners should not expect to master the skills immediately after one exercise, or even by the end of this course. I can't promise you'll be "the best sketchnoter ever," but you'll have the skills to start... mastery is up to you! This course will help you learn and practice the skills. Sketchnoting encompasses 5 different skills put together, and these skills take time and intentional practice before you see improvement. Mastery can take years of intentional practice!
Setting Expectations: The purpose of this course is to help you learn the skills of visual note-taking. You should not expect to complete this course in a single sit-down session or to binge all the lessons at once and expect to have mastered the skills. You must dedicate yourself to 1) learning the skills and 2) practicing them repeatedly over the 3 weeks of the program and beyond... only then will you find success!
Do the lessons in order and do not skip any lessons. Even if the exercises seem too basic or silly, it's important that you practice them anyway.
The entire purpose of the course is to get you practicing. If you do not do the exercises and do not practice, you will not find this course to be valuable.
Complete the lessons at your own pace, but beware! It's VERY easy to put off coursework or not do it at all. I encourage you to put this course into your calendar reminders and set a deadline to finish it. Do at least one lesson/exercise per day.
Continue to practice in a notebook/sketchbook. Keeping all of your practice work together will help you see improvement over time. Adding dates is also helpful for tracking your progress.
