Meet the Panelists

high school teacher

Carolyn Gardner-Hash

Virginia, USA

Carolyn Hash lives in Southwest Virginia, where she returned to teach high school Language Arts and Theatre after completing a BA in English from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a MS in British Literature from Radford University. In addition to working in public and higher education for the last 18 years, she has also enjoyed growing her family of five with husband, Philip. They have three boys and a loyal miniature dachshund named Beckett. She began using sketchnoting as a way to help students “read like writers” several years ago and quickly found Emily Mills as an incredible resource, particularly for students who are intimidated by sketching at first. With the right tools, sketchnoting has completely changed how her students interact with reading and writing in the classroom.

Educator & Trainer

Cynthia Nixon

California, USA

Cynthia Nixon has been an educator for 19+ years, combining her passion for teaching with a love for technology. Cynthia left the classroom to support her school as an Educational Technology Coach in 2015 and later returned to the classroom to teach 5th grade. She currently serves as the Elementary Mathematics Specialist and Ed Tech Lead. She is a Google for Education Certified Innovator and Trainer and frequently presents on technology integration and sketchnoting.

In addition to being an educator, Cynthia is Mom to two sweet boys and one tiny parakeet. She enjoys crocheting, reading, and watching baseball. While she never considered herself an artistic person, she caught the sketchnoting bug and leaned into her growth mindset in 2015. Her journey has taken her through both digital and analog sketchnoting and she is always looking for ways to incorporate this valuable skill into the classroom.
