Build a Daily Sketching Habit: 30-day cohort program

  • Closed

A 30-Day program to help you jumpstart and build a rhythm of daily creative expression into your life with a cohort of like-minded creatives!

Program runs May 5th - June 3rd

This is for you if...

"I want to create every day, but don't right now."

I'll let you in on a little secret... I'm a professional illustrator and I don't draw every day 🫣 ...but I wish I did! I need this program just as much as you do! We have a better chance of success when we involve others, so let's dive in together!

"I'm feeling bored with my current creative practice."

Meet other creative people like yourself and be inspired by their work! You might just meet a new friend, learn a new skill, or discover a style you want to try. Encouraging others can often be just as fulfilling as finishing a challenge.

"I desperately need structure to help me stay on task!"

I get it... sometimes you just need a little help to get your creative juices flowing. No need to think of what to create each day... that's been done for you! Each day you'll get an email with ideas, inspiration, and tips for success.

Meet Your Instructor

Emily Mills

I'm a professional illustrator most known for "sketchnotes" (aka live event drawings), and I'm the author of The Art of Visual Notetaking. I've been teaching creative workshops to thousands of students both online and in-person since 2017. I want to help you connect with your creativity and grow in confidence! When I'm not teaching, I run a creative studio, Flavor Graphics, alongside my husband in Bend, Oregon.

"I always fail! How can I be sure this program will work for me?"

Starting a new creative habit isn't always easy, especially when you're doing it alone. This program is meant to be done in community and has built-in accountability to help you build and sustain a Daily Sketching Habit:

Instructor Accountability

Every day I'll be emailing you a reminder to do your sketch along with some advice, prompts, and ideas to help you. I'm also hosting two live check-ins over zoom so you can ask questions, share your work, and meet others in a live setting.

Community Accountability

To help everyone in the cohort stay accountable to one another, I've opened up a private discussion room in the Community where we can share our work, ask questions, and meet each other.

Public Accountability

Sharing your work on social media is a great way to "prove" that you're doing the work (even if no one else sees it!)! Cohort members will use the hashtag #DailySketchHabit and tag @sketchacademy_ in posts. You'll even inspire others who aren't in the program!

"The secret of your success is found in your daily routine."

No. 1 New York Times bestselling author, coach and speaker

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the program start and end?

Make your first sketch on Friday, May 5th, 2023, and every day until 11:59pm on Saturday, June 3rd.

What will I be sketching every day?

"Sketch" is kind of vague on purpose and how you interpret that is up to you. You may want to sketchnote, do a visual journal entry, practice calligraphy, draw... No matter what you do, the point is to make intentional sketches on a page, every day, for 30 days. I'll personally be doing visual journal entries like these:

I'm not good at drawing. Is this for me?

The benefits of daily sketching is all about having a creative habit, expressing yourself, and enjoying the brain benefits like improved thinking, creativity, and relaxation. It's more about what you get out of it and less about how good you are. Still, I COMPLETELY understand wanting to be better at something or not get in too deep with something you don't feel experienced in! Here are a few thoughts and ideas:
  • Start with super small paper like post-its or Notecards, and just use what they have on hand. Even doing one small drawing a day can be helpful to get better!
  • Have you ever heard of a blind contour drawing? Here's an awesome video about it. This type of sketching is less about your results and more about your practice.
  • You could also follow a tutorial each day for your sketch. I personally love the Etherington Brothers Blog because they have loads of free step-by-step tutorials to pick from.

When are the live meetings?

Each meeting is slated for an hour but we might not take up the whole time... it depends on how many people show up and participate!

These meetings will be recorded and you will have access to the replays.

What supplies do I need?

The minimum requirement is to create a small sketch each day, at least the size of a post-it note. Maybe you want to do all of your sketches in one bound sketchbook, or maybe you just need 30 notecards. As long as you have paper and pen, you'll be good to go! You can read about my favorite sketching supplies here.

What size paper or notebook should I use?

I personally recommend starting small and only going bigger when you're ready. If a 30-day Challenge sounds intimidating, do a post-it note or notecard! I use a 3.5"x5.5" notebook most days. There are no rules or regulations about filling a page... the point is to sketch daily and build a habit, not obsess about details and rules.

I missed the sign-up window! Will this program be offered again?

I do plan to offer this program again but do not have set dates. The best way to stay tuned about upcoming offerings is to join my email list here.
